Paul's Story

My career in art began at age 19 when I worked for a printer during summer vacation in college. I became a Graphic Designer and started my own Design business in 1977. It was a lot of fun, although I rarely worked 40-hour weeks. They were more like 60 or more. I had great clients who required exceptional graphics. This required a high skill level, but it was worth it because I would need it as a fine artist. I found that a good work ethic is learned, not hereditary. I also discovered that doing good work is its own reward. • In 1989, I bought my first computer and never looked back. It made Graphic Design so much easier. At the same time, it moved me further away from traditional Illustration. Digital illustration is perfect for commercial work, but I missed making art by hand. I could have continued design work and retired in a few years. But I had always wanted to be a Fine Artist & Painter. So, instead of winding down my design career, I started transitioning from Graphic Design to Fine Art. Surprise! It took almost a decade. It was hard to leave some of my long-term clients. • Now, after all these years as a Fine Artist, I’ve come to another crossroads. I’ve always painted what I wanted, tempered somewhat by the need to sell paintings. And while we’ve sold lots of paintings and won lots of awards, it’s time to look inward. Now, I’m painting just for me. I’m still selling paintings, but they’re more personal and, at times, quite different from what people are used to. • Success requires a lot of hard work, but I’ve also been very lucky — with clients, lucrative projects, awards, and, most of all, love. My wife and I have been together for 51 years and just celebrated our 47th wedding anniversary. Thank you all!
